if i do say so myself. . .

"if the truth is so fragile, is it really the truth?"

serendipity

last night i went to hotel cafe with a lets-go-listen-to-cool-live-bands buddy. . . i forgot my camera, so i can't post a picture of the sax player who i SWEAR must be someone that somebody i know, knows. (did that make sense?) But he looks SOO almost familiar. he was very good.

anyhow, on the way there she was playing a cd that sounded familiar, and yet not. i said, i KNOW i have a CD by this band, who are they? turns out it was the new starsailor, and it turns out that we were at the SAME club when they played here last. only i didn't know her back then. i guess it's not all THAT weird, but these things trip me out.

and once again i failed to meet up with my friend who lives in hollywood. i was right by his house, but he was in silverlake. THE IRONY. . we coulda saved a lot of gas if i had just gone to the club he went to and he went to hotel cafe. But that's LA - everyone wants to be somewhere else. But i've been to hollywood 5 times in the last two months, and EVERY time BJ is either practically in a coma from overwork, or on the other side of town.

I'm supposed to be working on a paper right now. .

let's see just how effectively i can procrastinate. .

but i was thinking last night, after reflecting on my earlier conversation with sam about the self-proclaimed geeky-ness of someone's blog, and the general geeky tendancies of his extended family, that i must be a nerd.

as opposed to a geek. now, bear with me. . but it does seem that geek connotates someone who is very technically inclined - fascinated by numbers and programming and generally math/logic heavy.

whereas your nerd is kind of more well-rounded in general. your average nerd will have a general appreciation for things mathematical and logical, and can appreciate a number that is equally divisable by two consequtive prime numbers just as much as the next guy, but at the same time, will also have a rather unhealthy fascination with books and with totally useless facts about surrealist art, and will have watched an alarming number of art house films, and probably listens to NPR.

At the same time, your average nerd probably does NOT know how to reprogram their laptop to beam sattelite images into space, nor can they calculate the exact probability that when they get to the next stop light, it will be green. So there ARE some serious limitations to being a nerd. On the other hand, your garden variety geek often doesn't know who Haruki Murakami is.

ANYHOW, that said, I definitely fall more into the nerd catagory than the geek catagory, though i suspect they are not always mutually exclusive.

Anyone wanna go hang out at Border's with me, and then catch a show at the Lemmle???

adventures on amtrak

amtrak to santa barbara for only 20 smackers. what a deal. . . and here are the pictures to prove i was there. The clothing at SCAVENGE was all discounted to $5 an item. among my found treasures: purple suede boots, an angora and rabbit fur sweater, a velvet hoodie and a plum colored suit. i had to carry everything on my back though, that was a bummer. BUT the train to SB, i highly recommend it. I would go again! In a heartbeat. Ahh, the train! I missed the train. . . =)
